Fire Starting Quotes

Danielle LaPorte recently shared the quotes from her book The Fire Starter Sessions. Here are some of my favourites:

anything or anyone

that does not bring you alive

is too small for you

—David Whyte, poet

People who earn the label “creative” are really just people who come up with more combinations of ideas, find interesting ones faster, and are willing to try them out. The problem is that most schools and organizations train us out of those habits. —Guy Kawasaki, Reality Check

A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both. —Lawrence Pearsall Jacks

The only reason for time is so that everything doesn’t happen at once. —Albert Einstein

In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. —Albert Schweitzer

Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people. —Albert Einstein

Of all the fires, love is the only inexhaustible one. – Pablo Neruda

Spiritual practice is returning again and again to softness. —Stephanie Dowrick, Seeking the Sacred

Your way begins at the other side.

Become the sky.

Take an axe to the prison wall.

Escape.

Walk out like someone suddenly born into color.

Do it now.

—Rumi

The greater the artist, the greater the doubt. Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. —Robert Hughes, art critic

If consensus is overrated, I think balance is, too. I have no interest in living a balanced life. I want a life of adventure. —Chris Guillebeau, The Art of Non-Conformity

In the end, the quest for balance is bogus.

Love your burdens. Love them hard. And when

your loves knock you down or your weak ankles

trip you up, stop worrying about balancing

— ’cuz you’re not— and bounce.

—Kelly Diels, Cleavage

The antidote to exhaustion isn’t rest. It’s wholeheartedness. —David Whyte, poet

Enough of these phrases, conceit and metaphors,

I want burning, burning, burning.

—Rumi

Splendid quotes! I particularly like the one by Robert Hughes. It makes me feel better about my lifelong self-doubts as an artist!
