Brene Brown on Connection

I just watched Brene Brown’s TEDx Houston’s talk about vulnerability and connection. Resonated big time with Art of Hosting for me. Here are a few notes and thoughts sparked as I listened to her talk:

  • Connection… hosting conversations that matter is about connection, seeing people (reminds me of the South African greeting Sawa Bono/Sikhona).
  • Excruciating vulnerability…creating the container for that to be possible.
  • Believe that they’re worthy… reminds me of Byron Katie’s The Work, finding that truth in ourselves.
  • In looking for what the wholehearted had in common…an appreciative inquiry approach.
  • Courage’s original definition of telling the story of who you are with your whole heart…what’s possible during circle and other deep conversations.
  • Compassion and how we can’t be compassionate to others unless we’re kind to ourselves…that we must first host ourselves well before we can host and be of service to others.
  • Connection as being willing to let go of who we think we are in order to be who we are…reminds me of Theory U’s co-creating the future as it emerges, which requires immense letting go and letting come.
  • Stop controlling and predicting…holding space for conversations that matter is all about this; letting go of outcomes.
  • Vulnerability is core of shame, control, fear, and is also the birthplace of joy, creativity, belonging, love…it’s walking the chaordic path and being cognizant of vulnerability’s edge.

Pour a cup of tea and enjoy this wonderful 20 minute talk.
